MUSICIAN

Multi-instrumentalist, mostly performing on electric bass, acoustic bass, pedal steel, guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, violin, piano, keyboards and trombone.

ELECTRIC BASS
For many years, electric bass was my main instrument. From 1984 through 1989 I studied electric bass at Hilversums Conservatorium, and then joined Jaap Dekker's band. A few years later I also joined Mr. Boogie Woogie and Dicky Greenwood on electric bass and background vocals, eventually winning the Best Dutch Blues Bassist Award 2011 from the Dutch Blues Foundation. Performed with numerous other artists, touring with Candye Kane and with Lady A, and have been teaching bass at various music schools since 1989. Also I'm musical director and bass player with the wonderful United by Music.
ACOUSTIC BASS
In 1993 I joined Capelino on acoustic bass, which gave me the opportunity to develop my jazz chops. Many other gigs on acoustic bass followed, joining the bands of Anke Angel, Wouter Kiers, Outlaw Express, Swinghouse and Tim Kerssies, doing international tours with Lisa Otey, as well as the occasional show with Pinetop Perkins, Edwin Rutten, Do, de 3Js, Janne Schra, Leonie Janssen, Cees Meeusen, Guus Paat, Les Cook & Ed Huish, and many others.
PEDAL STEEL
In 2004 I started playing the pedal steel guitar, initially to add extra flavor to a few songs on my debut album Bassman's Holiday. Quickly it became a much requested instrument for studio and live performances. Currently I play pedal steel regularly with Men In Blues, Arthur Ebeling, Freelance Band, and Vance Lane Special; also I have played steel with Change of Key, Dick van Altena, Bertolf, Niko Christiansen & Friends (pedal steel), Pam MacBeth (pedal steel), Panhandle Swing and many others.
PIANO AND KEYBOARDS
During rehearsals I have often had to play the piano to help other musicians with their parts, especially in music schools and with United By Music. This would eventually lead to my playing the piano on tour with Candye Kane, and playing piano and keyboards occasionally with Men In Blues, Arthur Ebeling and the Freelance Band. In 2022 I played piano and keyboards and was musical director for a Dutch production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
GUITAR, LAP STEEL, DOBRO, MANDOLIN, VIOLIN, BANJO
Often in bands where I play the pedal steel, certain songs seem to require different sounds, which made me add different instruments to my setup. Currently, I regularly play pedal steel, guitar, mandolin and keyboards with Men In Blues, and pedal steel, guitar and keyboards with Arthur Ebeling; I have also played pedal steel, bass, violin and dobro with Outlaw Express, violin, percussion and harmonica with Henk de Kat, steel, keyboards, mandolin and violin with the Freelance Band, and violin and banjo with the Dirt Road Music Band.
TROMBONE
The trombone is a recent addition to my collection of instruments. My playing can be heard on John Frick's cd Let The Party Begin; I've also done some shows with the Autoreverse Jazz Orchestra and with a big band.
A listing of the various instruments I've played on albums is found in my discography.
